Born Joshua Otis “Josh” Turner on November 20, 1977, as a young boy, he participated in his church choir, singing the lead and bass parts. A devout Christian, he formed a gospel quartet known as the Thankful Hearts where his role was to sing bass and sometimes lead. In 1996 a physician discovered that Turner had developed a lesion on his right vocal cord. Although surgery was not necessary, he was required to rest his voice for an entire year.
